This type of anesthetic masks, also called “active” masks, is specifically designed to fit most stereotaxic frame in the market and deliver anesthetic gases with minimal researcher exposure during stereotaxic surgery in rats or mice. They have the following three excellent and unique features:
· The inlet and the outlet end are not directly connected, which allows that the outlet end can be used with evacuation and scavenging system, so there is no need to worry about the release of anesthetic gas from the animal nose and mouth into the environment, and at the same time, the use of anesthetic gas can be saved greatly.
· For mice, a cross bar was added into the conical nostril cavity of the mask to fasten the top incisor of the animal, and plus one curved spring block to stabilize the whole head. For rat, the incisors are fastened into the square hole of the adaptor. Meanwhile, the cavity of the two masks holds down the nasal bridge of the animal, which makes the head more stable.
· The size of the masks is very small (28*24*20MM for mice, and 28*30*25MM for rat), which will not interfere with the surgery on the head.
